Paul M Nicholson is a multidisciplinary artist and curator based in Ithaca, NY, where he serves as the Director of the Handwerker Gallery at Ithaca College. Prior to this role, he was the Director of the Martin Art Gallery at Muhlenberg College. Previously he worked at Parsons School of Design in New York City and was the founder/ director of Botanic Gallery in Brooklyn. He is a co-founder of the Bushwick Beer Garden and Formula Gallery in Buffalo, NY. Originally from Suva, Fiji, Paul grew up in Western New York. He holds an MFA from the University at Buffalo, an MS from Buffalo State University and a BFA from the State University of New York at Fredonia.

I take an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates traditional drawing, painting, and photographic techniques to create objects, installations, and public interventions. The themes in my work range from the explicitly political to the deeply personal, but my process consistently centers on exploring how the crafted object operates within shifting cultural, political, and economic landscapes. A sense of theatricality runs through my practice, after all, art is a form of theatre. In both my curatorial practice as well as my personal projects the subject of my work tends to center around epistemologies of the commons.
